bochum welt is an avant garde composer who has been releasing pioneering electronic music since 1994 on the respected rephlex label. his fascination with technology and multimedia is evidenced by his cd-rom release of the 16 bit videogame soundtrack "desktop robotics", and by his use of the leading-edge beatnik interactive audio system to deliver innovative audio content via the internet.

fashion has a gorgeous analogue feel to it and a distinctive retro/electro flavour - sounds like it could have been the theme to a late seventies version of tomorrow's world. minimalistic electronics with it's heart-tugging melodies are the characteristics of bochum welt's familiar musical sensibility. bochumwelt in fashion - a timeless pleasant taste

grooves issue six

bochum welt has been earning props as the retromeister of the rephlex stable, though he's more recently recorded for the likes of the fuzzybox label and now hymen. there's no hiding the kraftwerkian influence on these four tracks; he even goes for the teutonic robotic tone in chanting the lyrics to the title track and 'saint tropez'. only the remix of 'tropez' really hits here, with a groove that sounds like an r & b organist getting his hands on an analog synth for the first time. the rest is too pallid melodically to be truly distinctive from the rest of the vintage fetish pack.

(thaddi)

bella italia elettronica! und wieder greift gianluigi di constanzo in die tasten seines lieblings-moogs. diesmal und das erste mal überhaupt hören wir auch eine männliche stimme, die im stile der helden der 80er jahre dem sprechgesang frönt. musikalisch hat sich seit dem letzten release, programm 11, einer 7track ep auf elypsia records 1998, nichts getan. also dient dieser relase auf hymen in erster linie wohl bochum welt selbst, eine größere zuhörerschaft zu erreichen. daran liegt es wohl auch, daß auf die "dark elements" verzichtet wurde, ja, das ganze irgendwie gesäubert kommerziell nutzbarer dargereicht wird. trotzdem sind die 10 minuten spielzeit keine fehlinvestition, so minimal und melodiös wie "skanfrom" und "kraftwerkisch" (sic) kommt selten was daher. melodien für kinderherzen eben und wer bochum welt noch nicht kennt, wird hier erst so recht auf den geschmack kommen. packaged in a cute little 3-inch square gatefold slipcase, the in fashion 4-track 3" cd single is bochum welt's first release for the hymen label. welt (a.k.a. gianluigi di costanzo) has been recording since 1994 on a series of labels, but most notable are his series of releases for the renowned rephlex label. clocking in at less than 10 minutes in total and limited to just 800 copies worldwide, welt is clearly opting to play the 'quality not quantity' card with this single. "fashion" starts proceedings with a brooding, sweeping tune featuring squeaky snapping beats and a spoken vocal that talks about recording music on vintage synthesizers. "saint tropez (remix)" follows with a retro meets modern electro feel to it. the electro theme is continued on "neutron" although this time the pace picks up whilst maintaining the retro feel. the retro aspect is especially noticeable where a kraftwerk style vocoder vocal is used in the second half of the track. the single closes with the original version of "saint tropez", a track that has a similar yet more retro vibe to the remix but adds a spoken vocal talking about saint tropez. oddly the track stops and then starts awkwardly towards the end as if a chunk has been really badly edited out there is nothing new or innovative here but the tracks with added vocals/spoken material certainly benefit from the addition. somewhat disappointing for an artist of welt's standard.
