release date: 15.september.2014

'barren' is a compilation including rarities, remixes and outtakes stretching as far back as before the first keef baker release 'the widnes years' and as recent as 2013. it is both a stand-alone digital release in its own right and an addendum to the album 'dry', also featuring an innovative amalgam of musical styles and tempers.

keef baker is known for his authentic approach to idm and breakcore mixed with many other influences which of course also flow into this package. drifting ambient soundscapes, scatterbrained downtempo and dub cuts, forceful drum'n'bass, energetic breakbeats and abstract melodic layers generate a very own blend of moods ranging from tranquility to furiousness.

as on his previous releases keef baker has never ceased to amaze the listener with his exceptional deliveries; besides a collection of unreleased original compositions and a doom metal cover version of human league's 'seconds', this album also includes a different version of 'bobfoc' which was released on 'redeye'. 'barren' is highly recommended for anyone wanting to experience highly advanced aural sonority and masterfully planed musical warmth.

so we come to the end of the journey for keef baker releasing work under his own name, as he shifts his focus to other projects that have been making a mark. all the odds and sods that he hasn’t used over the years were passed to his label to compile a collection of songs that are a fitting departure to a remarkable journey. released in the same format as his latest nimon masterpiece; we have the main album in hardy copy format, backed up with a digital partner to give you more bang for your buck. it is of no surprise that the majority of the cd ‘dry’ harks back to baker’s n5md days musically. opener ‘stumpy’s christmas delight’ and ‘soldeed’ wouldn’t have sat that out of place on his debut, ‘the widnes years’; with beats that fit well within much of the structures of his early work, accompanied by subtle harmonies and keef’s well placed music theory that has served him so well on all his accomplishments. the dry humour is as evident as it always was, with the ability to create some of the more evocative idm out there, carrying the listener on a rocky emotional rollercoaster; only then to give it a tongue in cheek moniker to lift all seriousness out of the equation. it’s this ability to see life from both sides of the proverbial coin, that carries the listener on life’s ship of chartering the choppiest of seas, to the calmest of lakeside shores, that has elevated baker into one of the scenes most respected underdogs. from the situational aspects of the ludicrous ‘jason cheng and his football game’ (something i can relate to well), to the serious breakcore venetian snares nod of ‘amenema’, and the soaring pads of ‘moar ambient pls kthxbye’, as examples; we have here over the course of 35 tracks, an insight into all the tools at bakers disposal. none of his other projects sound like the work he has done under his own banner, yet as always, all of this output is incredibly varied and of the highest standard. it’s sad to see this chapter end, but then everything does have to have a conclusion, as everything in life is finite in one way or another. however, what better way to end a section of ones career by submitting a release of throwaway tracks, that have the ability to blow away many artists’ much prized main bodies of work; which surely underlines the credibility of baker’s place in underground electronic music history. depuis 1989, keef baker arpente les scènes obcures, du death metal au jazz en passant par l’idm. après une décennie d’albums publiés sur n5md, ad noiseam ou hymen, le voici qui livre une sorte de diptyque testamentaire en forme de collection de titres rares, remixes et outtakes avec ce keef baker – dry + barren. l’ensemble forme une sorte d’electronica protéiforme, très orientée fin 90s / début 00s, offrant une place prépondérante à la mélodie, avec tantôt des morceaux pop, tantôt une rugosité rock, tantôt une abstraction purement idm. comme avec toutes les compilations hétérogènes, il y a à boire et à manger dans ces deux albums, qui recèlent cependant de nombreuses pépites : on pense notamment au breakbeat industriel de destroyer, à la batterie flamboyante de tonikom, ou encore aux harmonies élancées de freefall et begin again. comme il l’annonce si modestement lui-même sur son site, keef baker était déjà à bidouiller son matos à l’époque où justin bieber était encore principalement constitué de liquide séminal. loin de constituer un gage de qualité en soit, force est de constater que son expérience déjà éprouvée chez n5md, ad noiseam ou hymen records implique un minimum d’huile de coude à son compteur, et ce n’est pas pour nous déplaire. parue chez hymen records le mois dernier, la double compilation dry / barren est un recueil, un patchwork de ce à quoi l’œuvre de keef baker peut ressembler, jusque dans ces moindres recoins. de l’ambient à la bass music, en passant par la drum’n’bass, la techno, le breakcore ou encore le trip-hop. dry et barren touchent à tout, à tous les styles, sans aucun complexe, et surtout avec une aisance et un style à chaque fois remarquable. rien ne lit cette double sortie, l’homogénéité ne crève pas les yeux, si ce n’est dans cette façon très délicate qu’il a de composer chacun des morceaux – tous aussi différents les uns que les autres – comme une réelle narration, le tout dans une mécanique bien rodée. dry s’ouvre sur stumpy’s christmas delight, quatre minutes de pur plaisir auditif, soit probablement la meilleure onde qu’une oreille humaine ait perçu depuis que nous nous sommes éloignés de nos anciens cousins hominiens. voir même plus. une rando musicale à ciel ouvert, le style de bande son qui passerait crème dans un clip promotionnel de l’office du tourisme islandais, et que l’on retrouve sporadiquement comme sur frayed edges, le très bon freefall ou encore yeah don’t worry there’s a good bit at the end. d’autres morceaux hantent ce recueil d’ambiances scifi à la matrix, quelque part coincé entre rob dougan, propellerheads et massive attack. une trame trip-hop d’une amplitude folle qui tend bien souvent à dévier vers un downtempo planant, un breakcore originel ou encore quelques lichettes de bass music bougrement efficaces, on notera funky franks frightening friday fistparty, l’excellent remix de running as fast as i can de tonikom ou encore celui de your anger is a gift de esa. mais ce n’est pas ces quelques morceaux, trop rares au goût de certains, qui définissent le mieux ce double album. on trouve également, et surtout, un ensemble de tracks d’une lourdeur ahurissante venant appesantir cet opus d’un bout à l’autre dans un épais et gras brouillard : destroyers, bartled, ou encore le superbe the flask of science, petit bijou superposant une trame mélodique réconfortante sur un régime drum’n’bass agressif à souhait. délice pour les papilles. passant allègrement d’un style à un autre sans excuse ni même explication, ce double album est un ascenseur émotionnel ou les époques et les genres s’interpellent, se confrontent et parfois se mêlent. évidemment il est difficile de tout apprécier dans un tohu bohu pareil, mais la corollaire est également vraie, et en l’occurrence pas qu’un peu. pas la peine de m’attarder sur chacune des 35 pistes qui forment ce diptyque, comme vous l’aurez compris il y en a pour tous, pour toutes les humeurs, à moins que la patte keef baker ne vous fasse aucun effet, auquel cas cela signifie que nos goûts divergent ostensiblement, mais on ne va pas se mentir, cela ne sera ni la première ni la dernière fois. dry et barren sont disponibles depuis le 15 septembre chez hymen records en cliquant sur leurs petits noms respectifs en début de phrase. allez quoi, un incontournable ça vaut bien 10 balles, non ? he has a penchant for melody, dissonance and his powerful arrangements remain undiminished by the passage of time. for the last decade, keef baker has been bringing his own demanding stylistic tendencies out to play -or was that prey- upon the expectations of ears across this world. his view of genres is irreverent to the point of insolence and i’m quite grateful for that. these beats are heavy, the bass reverberating around the inside of my skull like a series of explosive charges set to make reality implode. no, you’re not imagining this if you’ve heard his work, you know exactly how it hits. these beauties on ‘dry’ come out like the stars in a late evening sky. gradually the light diminishes until you are in the midst of a symphonic overture; odes to the allure of silence and the thoughts which you alone possess inside that fragile shell of a skull. no one else is here, just one fellow who likes to indulge his muse regardless of the outcome. alternating between ambient epics of sublime grandeur and a playful aside to a man and his love of football, there is an undeniable humanity and flawed beauty in what keith does. ‘dry’ is, for the most part, a wondrous collection dedicated to that most graceful of arts: humility. acknowledging how infinitesimal one is in the scheme of things isn’t generally on the agenda of most artists, but baker is no ordinary musician. i’m certain this wasn’t an easy album to make, elements of what he’s done previously come through but with added depth and dynamics. for those of you who loved his last album and it’s attendant addendum ‘light city’ believe me: plenty of that maniacal precision is in abundance on ‘dry’ but there’s no unifying narrative to tie it all together. he batters away on some of this with a ferocious glee, blurring the lines between what people think he’s about and what he really does which is whatever the fuck he wants. i’ve read press releases about his albums and they cracked me up to no end, how do you summarize an artist who is everywhere all at once without ever making you lose interest. i’m sure as hell not going to try. now, unfortunately, ‘dry’ is a bittersweet record because it is also the last he’ll be making under this name. given his talent and ability, wherever he goes next won’t be easy to figure out. keef is one of those composers who latches on to whatever sounds good and runs with it. sometimes all you get are breaks with a few atmospheres thrown over the top while with others you couldn’t count all the layers and sounds if your life depended on it. he can even write ballads, as evinced by the two part masterpiece “begin again” which is a conversation he must have had with himself at some point. intensity is pretty much the only constant to keith’s work, he’s unabashed in his love of multiple styles pushed to their maximum in the span of a single song. for those wondering why there’s been no mention of the appendix for ‘dry’, don’t go getting the torches and pitchforks. there will be one next week which focuses on ‘barren’ exclusively. this is just act one, what is on that second part is so massive and varied that it makes ‘dry’ seem tame. honest.
